iQor a premier provider of call center services continues its global expansion with the opening of its second call center in India. With its new Center of Excellence in Delhi, iQor plans to employ more than 1,000 people by the end of 2008, nearly doubling its operations in India.

“India is well-established in the call center industry and we are pleased to have increased our footprint so quickly and dramatically over the last 18 months,” said Vikas Kapoor, President and CEO, iQor, Inc.

MUMBAI: Global networking major Cisco has restructured its India operations more on the lines of a technology services company and the model, if successful, could be replicated abroad, a senior official said.

A unit of Honeywell International Inc. is laying off 225 workers in north Phoenix and moving those jobs to Tianjin, China, and Pune, India, among other locations.

Honeywell Process Solutions also is shifting manufacturing and engineering positions to York, Pa., Canada, Switzerland, and Ireland, said company spokesman Jake Saylor. The impacted jobs are at the unit's headquarters, on Union Hills Drive near Interstate 17 in Phoenix.

The Process Solutions unit manufactures controls and systems equipment for the energy, power generation, petrochemicals and printing sectors, among others.

Fears of a U.S. recession notwithstanding, India's software services industry is dealing with another pressing matter: companies are attempting to grow fast but cannot find people with the right skills and have to deal with high turnover rates.

When the internet suddenly collapsed last fortnight across the Gulf countries and India, with the snapping of a one inch thick cable, it provided a grim prospect of the net being hostage to terrorist attacks. Though the precise cause of the cables snapping is not clear, what is clear is that the net is more vulnerable than it was thought.

At this point in terms of the global software industry it does not appear that Indian software developers are an immediate threat to the Unites States software industry. The two software development locations are countries providing a vastly different type of service to the global arena. If we are only talking specifically about the highest levels of software engineers in India who graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), then there may be a threat to that same specific group that exists in the United States in terms of jobs.
